Joint Committee Charged with Oversight of Public Funds
Sacramento, CA – Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez appointed Assembly Member Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) Chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) and member of the important Appropriations Committee today.
“As Chair of JLAC I am committed to improving government transparency and protecting taxpayer’s money”, said Lara. “In light of the Bell scandal and our ongoing economic crisis, the Speaker and I will work on solutions to save taxpayers money and ensure strong ethical oversight over public funds.”
JLAC establishes priorities and assigns audits for the State Auditor. The Committee also ascertains facts, produces reports and makes recommendations to the State Legislature regarding revenues and expenditures of the State, its departments, subdivisions, and agencies. This process ensures the effective and efficient administration and management of taxpayer money and programs.
The primary purpose of the Appropriations Committee is to identify savings in fiscal bills, including bonds and alternative public financing. Lara will also serve on the Banking and Finance, Higher Education, and Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committees.
Lara was elected in November 2010 to represent the 50th Assembly District, which includes all of Bell, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Commerce, Cudahy, Lynwood and South Gate, as well as portions of Walnut Park, Downey and Florence-Graham
