SACRAMENTO – Today, the Legislature passed a balanced on-time budget.
"The Legislature's budget incorporated difficult, but necessary cuts to close the structural deficit, invest in education and a sound structural reserve," said Assembly Member Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens). "While every area saw major cuts, we did what we could to spare some of the worst cuts to programs that affect our most vulnerable populations such as Cal Works, healthy families, CalGrants, and childcare. State spending is at our lowest in 40 years; clearly we do not have a spending problem. However, if we truly want to solve our structural deficit, we need new revenues. This is a crucial step toward our economic recovery that will improve the quality of life for all Californians."
Assembly Member Ricardo Lara is Chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee and the Latino Legislative Caucus. He represents the cities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Commerce Cudahy, Lynwood, South Gate and unincorporated communities of Downey, Florence/Firestone and Walnut Park.
