Lara Honors Local Latino Human Rights Organization for California State Assembly LGBT Pride Ceremony

June 18, 2012

Sacramento —Assembly Member Ricardo Lara (D- Bell Gardens) today honored the Latino Equality Alliance (LEA) on the Assembly Floor during the California Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Caucus’ Pride Ceremony.

Accepting on behalf of the Latino Equality Alliance, were Ari Gutierrez and Eddie Martinez – Co-Chairs of the organization.  LEA serves Southeast Los Angeles and focuses on issues important to the Latino LGBT population, including marriage equality, LGBT inclusive immigration reform and family acceptance.

“Although Latino LGBT families often face significant obstacles -- discrimination, a lack of access to health care, and unfair immigration laws, among others – with the appropriate support and resources they are resilient,” said Lara. “The work LEA undertakes in our community is essential to the empowerment of LGBT Latino families across the state.”

The Latino Equality Alliance was founded in the aftermath of Proposition 8 and is a broad-based grassroots coalition of organizations serving LGBT Latino populations through promoting community activism and awareness throughout Los Angeles County, with a particular emphasis on Southeast Los Angeles.  This will be the 5th Assembly LGBT Pride Ceremony.  Each member of the California Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Caucus selects an outstanding LGBT individual or organization to honor.
