SACRAMENTO, CA - Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) who authored Senate Bill 712 which would close down Exide, released the following statement in response to news that the facility in Vernon will be closed:
"The news that Exide is finally to be closed will bring great relief to my constituents, who for decades have been exposed to toxic levels of lead and arsenic emissions from their Vernon facility.
But the legacy impacts of this facility will not go away overnight. To truly understand the magnitude of this issue, we need a comprehensive review of soil contamination and better data on the health impacts to people who continue to be exposed to unhealthy levels of lead and arsenic. We need to ensure that this deal adequately holds Exide morally and financially accountable for the damage they have caused. Impacted families deserve no less."
