Senator Richard Pan supported passage of resolutions at American Medical Association annual meeting in Chicago

SACRAMENTO, CA – Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) praised fellow Senator Richard Pan (D-Sacramento) for joining other physicians to support passage of resolutions at the American Medical Association annual meeting Chicago on June 12 that affirm the duty to care for patients regardless of their immigration status.

“Thank you Senator Pan for your leadership on health for all and closing the gaps in medical care in immigrant communities,” said Senator Lara. “Physicians’ duty is above all to their patients’ care, and Senator Pan brings the same spirit of humanity and humility to his work to expand Californians’ access to healthcare.”

The AMA physicians voted for resolutions that:

  • Oppose detention of immigrant families because of the negative health effects on children and families.
  • Call for improved healthcare standards in immigration detention facilities.
  • Protect American-born children of parents in deportation.
  • Safeguard confidentiality of immigrant medical records.
  • Increase healthcare access for refugees.

Senator Pan is a pediatrician, former UC Davis educator, and State Senator who chairs the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Subcommittee on Health and Human Services.
