Prime Time Primary (Senate Bill 568) will ensure California voters’ voice is heard in 2020


SACRAMENTO, CA – California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and State Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) are calling for California voters to have an earlier say in the Presidential Primary process.

California typically has a June primary. The late timing dilutes California’s impact and influence in the Presidential Primary nomination process.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Today the California Senate resoundingly approved the California Religious Freedom Act (Senate Bill 31) by a bipartisan vote of 36-0. Senate Bill 31 will prevent California agencies from sharing data that could be used to compile a federal registry based on religion, national origin or ethnicity.

SACRAMENTO, CA – With the Trump Administration poised to expand immigration detention nationwide, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved Senate Bill 29, the Dignity not Detention bill authored by Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens), by a 5-2 vote.

SACRAMENTO – Nine days after introducing a comprehensive bill package to reform California’s criminal justice system for juveniles and young adults, five of the measures have passed their initial policy tests.

The latest action came today as the Senate Public Safety Committee approved bills to eliminate court fees on those found innocent and to keep records sealed on those not convicted of a crime.

Senate Bill 190 – Juvenile Fees
Ends the harmful, unlawful and costly assessment and collection of administrative fees against families with youth in the juvenile justice system.
