Sen. Lara Continues Effort to Protect Elephants from Abusive Bullhooks
Effort builds off of the progress made with last year’s SB716

 

SACRAMENTO, CA — Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) today announced legislation to protect elephants from abuse by prohibiting the use of a bullhook or similar devices. Senate Bill 1062 follows from last year’s Senate Bill 716 which passed the Senate by a vote of 28-8 and the Assembly 69-8, but which was vetoed by Governor Brown.

SACRAMENTO, CA - Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) introduced Senate Bill 953 today to implement recommendations made by the California State Auditor to improve transparency and accountability of the Central Basin Municipal Water District. 

"Our ratepayers are the ones bearing the burden of mismanagement of their funds by the Central Basin Municipal Water District," said Senator Lara. "It's time that we hold the leadership of this Board accountable for the decisions they make, with ratepayer money."

PARIS, FRANCE  – As part of the California delegation to COP21 in France, Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) announced a groundbreaking climate change proposal that will set targets to achieve a 50% reduction in black carbon emissions, a 40% reduction in methane, and a 40% reduction in f-gases in the state of California by 2030. In 2013, Senator Lara authored Senate Bill 605 which directed the Air Resources Board to outline a draft strategy to combat Short Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP).

SACRAMENTO, CA – Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) announced today his intention to introduce legislation to ensure youth have real access to their constitutionally protected rights, including better access to counsel. Specifically, this bill would include instructions to law enforcement on the interrogation of youth and instructions to judges regarding the consideration of the information gathered during interrogations.

SACRAMENTO, CA – Governor Jerry Brown today signed Senate Bill 673 by Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) to establish additional permitting criteria that the Department of Toxic Substances Control must consider when deciding to issue or renew a permit for a hazardous waste facility. The new law responds to recent high profile cases such as Exide in Vernon that have raised real concerns about the accountability of toxic waste facilities and their responsibility to the communities they impact.

SACRAMENTO, CA – Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 504 by Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) to make sealing records for juvenile youth free and easing re-entry after serving their sentence. Current sealing fees create economic barriers on an already vulnerable population trying to get their lives in order.
