SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 1146 by Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) to require private universities receiving public funds to publicly disclose if they discriminate against students on their gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation. Title IX exempt private universities receiving state funding in the form of Cal Grants will need to notify students and staff about their lack non-discrimination protections.

SACRAMENTO, CA—Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 482 by Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) to require all prescribers issuing schedule II, III, and IV drugs to consult California’s Controlled Substance Utilizations Review and Evaluation System (CURES) before prescribing. This will help prescribers make informed decisions about their patient’s care and limit the number of people who doctor shop and overuse prescriptions drugs.

SACRAMENTO, CA — Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) who is authoring first-in-the-nation legislation to prevent cities and counties from contracting with for-profit immigration detention centers in California, reacted to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh C. Johnson's announcement this morning that the Federal government would review its current practices with regard to these facilities.

SACRAMENTO, CA — Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) presented today a resolution calling on the federal government to provide unaccompanied minors due process by providing government-funded attorneys to all indigent children fighting deportation or seeking asylum. Senate Joint Resolution 28 was approved by a vote of 31-2.
