SACRAMENTO, CA. – Senator Ricardo Lara, Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, commended Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today for the signing of AB 97 and SB 91, the budget trailer bills that revolutionize the distribution of state funding for California schools.  Under the new Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) school districts will not only receive more funding on a per pupil basis, but schools with high concentrations of disadvantaged English language learning students will receive substantial grants to meet their needs.

SACRAMENTO–This morning the United States Supreme Court ruled on California’s Proposition 8 and on the 17-year-old Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The justices ruled the sponsors of California’s controversial Proposition 8 did not have the legal standing to appeal a 2010 ruling against the measure. This move upholds same-sex marriages in California. The Justices also struck down provisions of DOMA that denied federal benefits like Social Security or the ability to file joint tax returns to same-sex married couples.

SACRAMENTO– Yesterday afternoon, the White House honored California State Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach) as one of ten openly LGBT elected or appointed officials who are “Harvey Milk Champions of Change.”  The event falls on Harvey Milk’s birthday and recognized honorees for their commitment to equality and public service.

SENATE COMMITTEE PASSES LANDMARK BILL TO PREVENT ABUSE IN DETENTION FACILITIES

SACRAMENTO- Senate Bill 716 authored by Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach), passed out of the Senate Committee on Public Safety today. SB 716, also known as the Sexual Abuse in Detention Elimination Act 2013 (SADEA), would fully implement policies consistent with or more protective than the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards.
