AB 187 will allow the State Auditor to examine local governments at risk for waste, fraud and abuse

SACRAMENTO – Today, Governor Brown signed AB 187 by Assembly Member Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) which will strengthen the State Auditor’s assessments of state agencies and programs to include local governments in order to identify and prevent fraud, waste and mismanagement at the local level.

Pérez (D-Los Angeles) and a bipartisan delegation to Mexico City this week in an effort to strengthen the economic ties between California's largest and most important trading partner. AB 592 Prohibits employers from interfering with an employee's ability to take pregnancy and family medical leave in California

SACRAMENTO – The Senate voted 23-12 today in favor of AB 592, a measure authored by Assemblymember Lara (D-Bell Gardens) aimed at protecting an employee’s right to take job-protected pregnancy and family medical leave. AB 592 brings California’s pregnancy and family medical leave laws in line with the federal Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) by clarifying that "interference" is a basis for liability in California.

AB 165 Will Help Identify, Eliminate and Prevent Illegal Student Fees

Sacramento, Calif. – The Senate voted to end the illegal practice of charging K-12 students fees to participate in educational activities with a 51-22 vote. Assembly Bill 165 by Assemblymember Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) will put complaint and auditing procedures into place that will help identify, eliminate, and prevent the charging of illegal fees in violation of a student’s constitutional right to a free public education.

SACRAMENTO – Another successful measure for Assembly Member Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) passed the Senate today with a 27-8 vote. AB 187 ensures transparency and oversight in local government by allowing the State Auditor to examine local governments during the course of her high-risk audit program to determine if there are any areas that are at risk of fraud, waste or mismanagement.

Joint Legislative Audit Committee convenes oversight hearing of unspent money

SACRAMENTO – The Joint Legislative Audit Committee, chaired by Assemblymember Ricardo Lara, held an oversight hearing today to review the state's progress in spending federal stimulus funds. The hearing focused on State Auditor Elaine Howle’s recent report which highlighted the nearly $8 billion dollars currently at risk of being returned to the federal government if the state does not spend the funds by approaching deadlines.
