SACRAMENTO, CA – Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) released the following statement in response to the State Audit finding the University of California has not adequately ensured compliance with its employee displacement and contract policies:
“The California State Auditor has found a troubling pattern of low wages and second-tier treatment of contract employees as well as poor contract oversight at the University of California. Janitors, landscapers, drivers, food service workers and others on contract earn on average $3.86 less per hour than university employees, and one-quarter of vendors provided no health or retirement benefits to workers.
“Instead of living up to its values as an engine of opportunity for our state, the University of California is behaving more like Trump University in its treatment of contract workers. Automatic contract extensions undermine UC’s own policies meant to ensure fairness for all workers. That is why I have authored Senate Bill 574 to end UC’s second-tier treatment of contract workers and to increase oversight.
“I look forward to working with the University of California and the Legislature to implement the findings of this audit and ensure UC does right by all its workers.”
