 Senator Ricardo Lara Sworn-in Today, Becomes California's First Openly Gay Senator of Color in State History
 
SACRAMENTO- Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) was officially sworn in as a California Senator representing the 33rd district that now encompasses the cities of Maywood, Huntington Park, Walnut Park, South Gate, Lynwood, Paramount, Signal Hills, Long Beach and Bell Gardens. Through his election, Senator Ricardo Lara becomes the first openly gay Senator of color in California. He released the following statement after receiving the oath of office administered in the Senate chambers:
 
"I am honored to join my colleagues in the Senate and I am eager to hit the ground running and get right down to work. This year was a historic year for us as Democrats in both houses and we will use this momentum to keep us focused. We will work hard to provide good paying jobs to working families, adequate health care access to all Californians and a strong infrastructure to ensure that California continues to be the prosperous and innovative State that we all know and are proud of.”
