LYNWOOD — Lynwood-based business owner Dr. Barry Diermenjian of Smiles West Dentistry was honored Oct. 23 by state Sen. Ricardo Lara as he hosted the 33rd state Senate District’s 2013 Excellence in Business Awards Ceremony in Long Beach.
Lara honored 22 business owners in his district.
“We are here tonight to honor diverse businesses from our entire region, businesses that have a passion for the communities they serve,” Lara said in his opening statements to the full house.
With his Excellence in Business Awards, Lara recognized the role small businesses play in supporting the local economy.
Diermenjian’s Smiles West Dentistry was also honored earlier this year by the city of Lynwood as its business of the year.
Since 2010, Smiles West Dentistry has donated more than $17,000 worth of food and sponsorships to various city holiday-season programs, all of which have benefitted hundreds of underprivileged Lynwood seniors and families over the years.
“We would like to congratulate Dr. Barry for being recognized by the senator,” said Rozie Carillo, recreation superintendent for the city. “It’s not a surprise though. Business owners like Dr. Barry are very rare and we are lucky to have him in our community. Dr. Barry and Smiles West Dentistry and the dozens of other community partners who donate without hesitation help make the holidays a little better for our families in need.”
“Tonight we celebrate the rich spiritual, cultural and ethnic traditions that are the fabric of each of the communities I represent,” Lara said.
He said that locally owned businesses contribute to 90 percent of the jobs in the region. Because of local businesses “we are now the eighth largest economy in the world.”
“That’s a testament to your hard work,” Lara told the business owners in attendance. “You make a difference in the communities that you serve.”
