Statement from Senator Lara and Assemblymember Thurmond on Supreme Court’s Janus Decision

June 27, 2018

SACRAMENTO, CA – The chairs of the Senate and Assembly Labor Committees, Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond), released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Janus v. AFSCME.

“As the chairs of the labor committees of the California Legislature, every day we bear witness to the dignity of working people who are standing up for their rights against the rich and powerful.

“The billionaires who backed the Janus decision want to roll back 40 years of precedent that have helped working people to secure higher wages and stronger job protections. Unionization has led to historic workplace protections for both unionized and nonunionized workers.

“This narrow decision by a divided Supreme Court cannot silence the voices of California’s working people, who have our support in the struggle for fair wages and working conditions for all. As the chairs of the legislative labor committees, we will continue fighting against attacks on California’s working families.”
