Welcome! I’m Senator Lena Gonzalez and I represent the 33rd District. The 33rd District represents nearly 1 million residents of Los Angeles County, including Long Beach, and the Southeast Los Angeles cities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Lakewood, Lynwood, Maywood, Paramount, Signal Hill, South Gate, and part of Los Angeles.

I’m honored to represent the working people of the 33rd District who drive California’s economy, from the Port of Long Beach to the transportation corridor that links California to the rest of the country. Securing continuous funding to invest in broadband infrastructure in poorly served communities will create jobs and provide economic opportunities.  

California can narrow the digital divide by investing in 21st century infrastructure, updated internet speed standards, and above all, equitable broadband deployment. The global pandemic has underscored the importance and urgency of this civil rights issue. California should commit to ensuring all communities have the technology needed to participate fully in our society, our economy and our democracy.

Sacramento, Calif. – On June 1st, 2021 the California Senate passed Senator Lena A. Gonzalez’s (D-Long Beach) Senate Bill (SB) 338 Protecting Port Truck Drivers. SB 338 helps protect essential supply-chain workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. SB 338 adds trucking companies to an existing Division of Labor Standards Enforcement “bad actor” list if those companies do not provide required health and safety protections and benefits to their workers or have outstanding serious health and safety violations.

Sacramento, Calif. – On June 1st, 2021 the California Senate passed Senator Lena A. Gonzalez’s (D-Long Beach) Senate Bill (SB) 245 the Abortion Accessibility Act. The Abortion Accessibility Act will require all state-licensed health care service plans or disability insurance policies issued after 2022, to cover abortion services without a co-payment, deductible, or any type of cost-sharing requirement. This will finally remove high out-of-pocket costs that act as one of the most significant barriers to care for low-income individuals.

Sacramento, Calif. – On May 15th, 2021, Senator Lena A. Gonzalez (D-Long Beach) and Senator Maria Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles) released the following statements in response to the $454 million proposed funding allocation in Governor Newsom’s 2021-22 Budget May Revise to clean Exide’s former Vernon facility. For decades, Exide conducted battery recycling operations that contaminated surrounding properties. To this day, hazardous chemicals still pollute the area and threaten the health and wellbeing of thousands of families living in Southeast Los Angeles.

Sacramento, Calif. – Today, Senator Lena A. Gonzalez (D- Long Beach) and Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D- Winters) applauded Governor Newsom’s historic investment of $7 billion in funds for broadband within the newly released May Revise budget proposal. Under the proposal, existing Caltrans networks will be leveraged to build open-access broadband infrastructure as roads and underground utilities are constructed. This will maximize funds and ensure a quick and efficient deployment of modern, durable, high-speed internet infrastructure.

Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Winters) and Senator Lena A. Gonzalez (D-Long Beach) have led a group of 17 members of the California Legislature in calling upon the governor and legislative leadership to support a major investment in broadband infrastructure and service for Californians without reliable, affordable internet.

The effort comes as the governor considers adjustments to his January budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2021-22 in the annual “May Revision.”
