California — Today amidst a historic mega-drought, wildfires, and fossil-fueled public health crises, Assemblymember Jim Cooper, Chair of the Assembly Committee on Public Employment and Retirement, refused to allow Senate Bill 1173, California’s Fossil Fuel Divestment Act, to be heard in his committee.

A bill that would have forced California’s public pension systems to sell their oil and gas holdings has been dropped from a state Assembly committee agenda for Wednesday, signaling that it won’t move forward this year.

Climate, environmental, and social justice advocates on Tuesday condemned the decision by a Democratic California lawmaker to kill proposed legislation that would require two of the state's leading pension funds to divest from the fossil fuel industry.

Cases of catalytic converter theft began skyrocketing across the nation during the pandemic, and Long Beach is no exception.

Stolen catalytic converters are a hot commodity due to the precious metals they contain; people saw them off vehicles in order to sell them to recycling centers and muffler shops for cash.

From 2018 to 2019, 381 catalytic converters were stolen in Long Beach, according to data from the Long Beach Police Department. Then, as the pandemic arrived, there was a sudden explosion in these thefts.
