SACRAMENTO, CA – The first-in-the-nation legislation to expand health care coverage to all Californians, regardless of immigration status, was held in the Senate Appropriations Committee today, giving the Senate additional time to identify funding solutions. Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Huntington Park/Long Beach), author of SB 1005, vowed to work with Senate colleagues and interested stakeholders through the summer to advance the legislation known as the Health for All Act.

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, SB 1441 introduced by Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), Senator Ricardo Lara (D- Huntington Park/ Long Beach) and Senator Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles), as part of the California Accountability in Public Service (CAPS) Act package of ethics reform bills, cleared the Senate with unanimous support by a vote of 33 to 0. The bill bans fundraisers at lobbyist homes and firms.

SACRAMENTO — Today, the California Ed.G.E. (Education for a Global Economy) Initiative authored by Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Huntington Park/Long Beach) advanced out of the Senate Education Committee by a vote of 7 to 0. The bill, SB 1174, would place an initiative before voters on the November 2016 ballot and ask them to amend portions of Proposition 227 which limits public school instruction to English-only.

SACRAMENTO — Today, SB 1005 known as the Health for All Act authored by Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Huntington Park/Long Beach) advanced out of the Senate Health Committee by a vote of 6 to 1. The bill will expand access to health care coverage for all Californians, regardless of immigration status.

SACRAMENTO – Today, the California Accountability in Public Service (CAPS) Act, comprised of three bills aimed at increasing transparency and accountability in political practices, including banning gifts from lobbyists, advanced out of the Senate Elections & Constitutional Amendments Committee by a vote of 5-0. The bills, SB 1441,SB 1442 and SB 1443, were introduced by President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), Senator Ricardo Lara (D- Huntington Park/ Long Beach) and Senator Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) in March.

SAN FRANCISCO — Today, Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach/Huntington Park) visited West Portal Elementary School in San Francisco – home to one of the district’s most sought after two-way Chinese immersion programs – to unveil SB 1174, the California Ed.G.E. (Education for a Global Economy) Initiative which asks voters to amend Proposition 227 and promote multilingual education in California schools.

SACRAMENTO – Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach/Huntington Park) announced a collaboration today with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) to enhance existing law enforcement training regarding the investigation of crimes involving persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A law signed in 2013 only required training for law enforcement agencies working with this community living in state mental hospitals or developmental centers.
