Defending Our Rights, Fighting for Our Communities
Dear Neighbor,
As our communities face new challenges under the federal administration’s policies, I’ve been working this month to defend your rights and ensure access to essential services—while also taking proactive legislative action to push back against these threats.
California Latino Legislative Caucus Priorities
As Chair of the Latino Caucus, I’m proud to share our bold 2025 legislative priorities—12 bills that protect immigrant families at schools, work and hospitals, expand access to food and healthcare, and defend our rights and diversity in the face of harmful federal actions. Read about them here.

Letter to the US Department of Homeland Security
On behalf of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, I wrote a letter to the US Department of Homeland Security to express our outrage that federal agents would seek entry to two California elementary schools in LAUSD. The targeting of minors on school property for immigration enforcement actions raises numerous concerns and the resulting chilling effect is substantial.
The Trump Administration and the Department of Homeland Security should keep its focus on hardened criminals, not elementary school students attending class. As the Latino Caucus we remain dedicated to defending the rights of our students and our most vulnerable communities.
Keeping Our Roads Safe
In response to potential federal action to eliminate oversight and collision reporting requirements for vehicles with advanced driver assistance features, I have introduced Senate Bill 572. I am pleased to share the bill recently passed a key committee and you can watch my remarks and testimony in support here. Californians deserve transparency from vehicle manufacturers, and we won’t let billionaires in our federal government interfere with critical public safety information for consumers and regulators.
Celebrating Dolores Huerta
Social justice and labor rights champion Dolores Huerta is a deeply beloved and iconic Latina trailblazer, who continues to inspire generations of leaders to fight for their dreams and a better tomorrow. We celebrated her birthday at the State Capitol, and you can watch the ceremony here.

Your Voice, Your Government Town Hall Recap
This month, I hosted a virtual town hall to hear directly from you. Many of you expressed concerns about protecting educational programs, services for veterans, Medi-Cal funding, and the impacts of tariff increases and rising costs. As your state Senator, I will do everything in my power to advocate for you and fight back against policies that threaten the wellbeing of our communities. If you missed the event, you can watch the town hall here. And if you attended, or want to help shape future town halls, take a moment to share your thoughts in our survey!
