Dear Neighbor,

Once again, our communities have been shaken to the core as egregious federal immigration enforcement operations continue nationwide. Within just days of each other we saw two fatal ICE-involved shootings in Texas and Maine. My thoughts are with the families, friends, and loved ones of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero and all those impacted. I want our communities to know that my Senate office is here for you. I remain committed to advancing policies that protect our communities and stand united with our immigrant families and all Californians affected.

We’re now in the second week of the Legislature’s summer recess, and my team and I remain active throughout the district. We hosted a town hall in Catalina Island, shared a new small business grant program supported by a $1 million state investment I was proud to secure, and partnered with local leaders and volunteers for this weekend’s Bell Gardens community cleanup. Stay tuned throughout the summer as we continue sharing resources, district updates, and news about our work on the issues that matter most to our communities.

Standing With Our Immigrant Communities

The recent fatal ICE-involved shootings have deepened the fear, grief, and uncertainty felt by immigrant families across the country. Too many lives have been endangered or lost under this federal administration’s reckless and harmful anti-immigrant agenda. Here in California, we will continue standing with our communities and affirming that immigrant families are valued, protected, and welcome. As Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, I will keep advancing policies that safeguard immigrant communities and California families, while ensuring residents have access to trusted Know Your Rights information and resources.

Join Us for a Bell Gardens Community Cleanup

You’re invited to join my office for a morning of community service as we work together to beautify Bell Gardens and improve the I-710 Freeway corridor. This volunteer cleanup is an opportunity for residents, community organizations, and local partners to make a positive impact by helping remove litter and revitalize one of our district’s busiest freeway entrances. Serve On The LA County Independent Ethics Commission 

Los Angeles County’s first-ever Ethics Commission is now accepting applications. This commission will serve as an independent ethics oversight body for the County and anyone who lives in LA County is welcome to apply. Catalina Island Town Hall

I was honored to co-host a community town hall in Avalon with Congressman Robert Garcia to hear directly from Catalina Island residents. We discussed affordable housing and transportation, reliable broadband, healthcare access amid looming federal cuts, local wildlife concerns and more. These conversations help ensure Catalina’s unique needs are heard at both the state and federal levels. I remain committed to serving as a strong voice in Sacramento for all Senate District 33 residents and connecting our communities with resources and support. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

New Long Beach Small Business Grant Program

Last year, I was proud to secure $1 million in state funding to invest in the success of Long Beach’s small businesses and strengthen the local economy. With this funding, the Bixby Knolls Community Foundation is administering four new grant opportunities to provide local businesses in business improvement districts with the resources they need to grow, adapt, and thrive. Small businesses are the heart of our communities, creating jobs, supporting families, and bringing vibrancy to our neighborhoods. Applications are now open and close July 31, 2026. Stay Cool! Heat Advisories Continue in Southern California

As high temperatures continue across Southern California, I encourage everyone to take precautions by staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day when possible, and checking in on older adults, young children, and neighbors who may be especially vulnerable. New Minimum Wage for Workers in Unincorporated LA County

Beginning July 1, 2026, the minimum wage for workers employed in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County increased to $18.47 per hour. This wage increase applies to all eligible workers, regardless of immigration status, employer size, or where employees live. Workers should review their paychecks to ensure they are receiving the correct legal wage and know that support is available if they believe they have been underpaid. CalAssist Mortgage Fund Expands Eligibility

The CalAssist Mortgage Fund has expanded eligibility, allowing more California homeowners recovering from recent disasters to qualify for up to 12 months of mortgage payment assistance for their primary residence. The program now includes eligible homeowners with multiple properties and certain Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOCs), while updated income limits have increased eligibility in many counties, including Los Angeles County. Assistance is free, does not have to be repaid, and is available to homeowners whose primary residence was destroyed or severely damaged and made uninhabitable by a qualifying disaster between January 1, 2023, and January 8, 2025. Because funding is limited and applications are reviewed on a first come, first served basis, eligible homeowners are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
