Exide Update

February 27, 2023

Update February 27, 2023

  • Recent findings at USC and Occidental College reported serious shortfalls in the Exide Cleanup, specifically, from lead contamination found in homes that had already undergone the remediation process. Additionally, significant funding reserved for the cleanup of parkways was not used by required spending deadlines. Community also raised concerns about public safety throughout the completion of the remediation work, including ensuring that clean-up sites are monitored to ensure worker safety, and that property owners receive timely and easily understandible notifications and updates about the status of work completed at their property.
  • The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) which oversees the Exide Cleanup held a community meeting to provide updates. The department plans to address these concerns, hold multiple public meetings and provide the community with a correction plan.
  • My office will continue to follow up with DTSC and community to monitor progress and push for greater oversight and efficiency on this issue. In the meantime, for more information and udpates on the Exide Cleanup, visit the DTSC Exide Residential Cleanup website.
