California
Senate District 33
California’s 33rd Senate District encompasses Southeast Los Angeles, the City and Port of Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, and Catalina Island.
The northern part of Senate District 33 is the Southeast Los Angeles (SELA) region, which spans over 15 square miles with a diverse population of nearly 290,000 residents that is predominantly Latino (84%). Thousands of years ago, the area was home to the Tongva people, Indigenous communities who thrived off the natural resources of the land including the beloved Los Angeles River. Today, SELA's entrepreneurial spirit fuels a vibrant local economy, where mom-and-pop restaurants, flower shops, beloved bakeries, and mouthwatering street food create a lively and welcoming community for all to enjoy. SELA has a strong history of community activism rooted in deep community connections through Promotora networks, collaborative non-profit efforts, and youth-led movements. The SELA community is a powerful force at the heart of grassroots efforts, driving positive change across key issues, from environmental justice to education and workers' rights.
The southern portion of Senate District 33 includes the City of Lakewood, the City of Long Beach, Signal Hill, and Catalina Island. Lakewood spans 9.5 square miles with over 150 acres devoted to parks and open spaces and enjoys a strong economic base of over 3,000 commercial and retail businesses. Signal Hill is a small city with a population of about 11,000 and is largely known for Signal Hill Park, which sits at an elevation that offers 360-degree views.
Surrounding Signal Hill is the City of Long Beach, one of California’s most diverse communities, boasting yearly cultural celebrations including Cambodian New Year Festival (Sankranta), the Filipino Festival, Juneteenth, and Día de los Muertos. It is a vibrant coastal city home to the Port of Long Beach, the iconic Queen Mary, and a wealth of local treasures, from the Aquarium of the Pacific to the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) and a thriving food scene. Catalina Island officially joined Senate District 33 in late 2024 following the redistricting process. The stunning Catalina Island and its charming town of Avalon offer a variety of outdoor recreational activities, drawing visitors for their breathtaking scenic views and nature.
