Signal Tribune: Signal Hill Park receives $5 million investment for outdoor amphitheater

BY RICHARD H. GRANT

The Signal Hill Park amphitheater will receive a full redesign and upgrades thanks to a $5 million check presented to City officials Tuesday morning from California State Senator Lena Gonzalez.

The money will go towards vast improvements and redesigning efforts of the outdoor amphitheater that is often used for Concerts in the Park and various holiday events. The city approved the purchase of over 6,000 square feet of land behind the current stage in July 2021 that will be used to expand the park’s footprint.

“This amphitheater redesign will create a state-of-the-art venue for all to continue to enjoy the wonderful events that have become signature in our cities such as Spring Fest and the Halloween carnival,” said Joe Hoefgen, Signal Hill’s interim city manager.

The city has slowly been buying up the land along E. 21st St.—adjacent to the south side of the park near the intersection of Cherry Avenue and 21st Street—over the last three years.

The redesign will allow for larger and more varied performances throughout the year as a way to highlight local artists.
