EdSource: Sen. Lena Gonzalez is introducing policy to keep immigration enforcement away from schools
Sen. Lena Gonzalez is introducing legislation today — to be sponsored by State Superintendent Tony Thurmond — that would try to prevent immigration officials from entering school campuses, according to a media release from Thurmond’s office.
The legislation would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal authorities have a judicial warrant in order to enter schools, including charters, and county offices of education.
It would also prevent police from working with immigration efforts that take place within a mile of a school — and stop any information from being shared about members of school communities, including students, families and employees.
“All California children deserve safe school environments that prioritize student learning, regardless of immigration status,” Gonzalez said in a statement.
“As Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, I’m proud to be partnering with Superintendent Tony Thurmond to author this important legislation, which will prevent disruptions to student learning, keep children in school, and prevent families from being torn apart.”
California already has a number of laws and policies in place to protect immigrant students and their families. For more information, see:
