Know Your Rights, $2.5B for Wildfire Recovery, 2025-26 Budget
Dear Neighbor,
The beginning of 2025 has been tough for many families, friends, and neighbors across our state. In the Senate, we’re working closely with the Assembly and the Governor to protect Californians and ensure everyone has access to the resources they need.
In light of recent federal immigration actions, one of the most impactful things we can do to support immigrant communities is to raise awareness about Know Your Rights resources. My office has compiled helpful information from the California Attorney General’s office, including details on immigrant rights, community rapid response networks, legal aid, and more. Please review these materials and share them widely with anyone who might benefit.
In addition, to bolster the state’s legal resources to defend against federal overreach, the Legislature has voted to approve $25 million for the California Department of Justice and state agencies and $25 million for legal aid organizations supporting immigrant communities.
Meanwhile, I’ve been closely monitoring wildfire response and recovery in Los Angeles County and remain committed to supporting our neighbors during this difficult time. We’re providing regular updates on key resources—be sure to check our resource page for the latest information.
In response to these wildfires, I was proud to speak on the Senate Floor in support of a $2.5 billion relief package to assist affected communities. This funding now approved by the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Newsom will support ongoing relief efforts and provide vital resources to help rebuild and recover.
More recently, the Senate announced the introduction of the Fight for Firefighters Act. This bill proposes a desperately-needed modern day staffing plan to strengthen firefighting and fire prevention efforts.
Lastly, the Governor released his proposed 2025-26 budget, which reflects a fully balanced plan with no deficit and projects $16.5 billion in additional revenue. Over the next few months, I look forward to working with Senate leadership, the Assembly, and the Governor to craft a final budget that strengthens California families and reflects our shared values.
