Senator Lena Gonzalez Issues Statement on Governor Newsom’s Budget Proposal

SACRAMENTO – Senator Lena Gonzalez (D-long Beach) released the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s 2021-22 budget proposal:

“I was pleased to see Governor Newsom’s newly released budget proposal incorporates significant investment toward critical programs and services that will help ensure a strong path toward wellness and prosperity for our communities. Many families, students, workers and businesses have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and we must do all we can via a financing framework of substance that will adequately meet the immediate needs of Californians and help our entire state recover and flourish.”

“From record funding for education, continued funding for COVID-19 testing and vaccines, and stimulus payments that could benefit millions of low-income families across the state, I greatly appreciate the many important goals this budget sets out to achieve for Californians.”

“As Chair of the Transportation committee, and member of the Environmental Quality Committee, I commend the prioritization of climate change action and environmental justice within this budget, including the $1.5 billion for infrastructure and incentives to help implement the state's zero-emission vehicle goals. In my district, too many families and children suffer from chronic diseases linked to poor air quality, and I firmly believe we must take meaningful strides today if we want to achieve better air quality for Californians and protect the health of our communities.”

“The budget also sets aside funds for much needed improvements within the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and for the cleanup of contaminated properties. This includes the cleanup of a former battery-recycling plant, Exide, in Senate District 33, which left many homes polluted with dangerous chemicals. While this is a good first step to ensure DTSC is properly securing and protecting the health of our communities, more work needs to done to fund clean-up efforts and actualize reforms. I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues and the Governor further as we work toward substantive reform.”

“Today marks only the beginning of the budget process, and I am ready to immediately work on a budget that will adhere to our values and help improve the lives of all Californians and the people of Senate District 33.”
