Majority Leader Gonzalez Issues Statement After Big Oil Pulls Referendum Aiming to Overturn Neighborhood Oil Drilling Health Protections

Sacramento, Calif. – Majority Leader Gonzalez (D-Long Beach) released the following statement after the oil industry announced it was dropping its referendum aiming to overturn neighborhood oil drilling health protections:

"Californians have made their voices heard loud and clear: we do not want oil drilling polluting our homes and neighborhoods. Two years ago, we achieved a significant victory with SB 1137, establishing a 3,200-foot health protection zone around oil wells, safeguarding sensitive places like schools, childcare facilities, playgrounds, and hospitals. Today, through the unwavering commitment of a strong coalition of hundreds of supporters and community members, we have upheld this critical law that protects California families. I extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who supported us in this effort. Together, we will ardently fight for SB 1137 to be enforced as the law of the land and continue our journey towards a cleaner, greener, and healthier future for all."
