Senator Lena Gonzalez Presents $350,000 Check to City of Maywood for Riverfront Park Playground Renovation

August 12, 2021

Sacramento, Calif. – On August 12, 2021 Senator Lena A. Gonzalez (D-Long Beach) presented a $350,000 check to the City of Maywood for the renovation of Riverfront Park. Funding for the park was provided from state budget discretionary funds with support from Senator Gonzalez.

“Today I was very happy to present a check to the City of Maywood to help fund the renovation of Maywood Riverfront Park, which offers vital recreational opportunities and community resources to promote public health and improve the quality of life for local children and families,” said Senator Lena Gonzalez (D-Long Beach). “Maywood is one of the most densely populated areas in our entire state. It is home to more than 26,000 residents in just over one square mile of land, and parks like these provide much needed open space that will benefit families for generations to come.”

“I would like to thank Senator Gonzalez for representing Maywood and helping secure these funds for our community,” said Mayor Pro Tem Heber Marquez. “With the allocated $350,000, children with disabilities will now have greater access to a space where they can enjoy the outdoors and summers at the park will be a bit cooler with additional shaded areas for all of our residents.”

“For too long Maywood has dealt with the impacts of environmental racism,” said Maria Guadalupe Lopez, Communities for a Better Environment member. “Investing and improving our quality of life and bringing green spaces such as parks is a great step. Neighborhoods like Maywood deserve to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live on clean soil through community-led solutions.”

“The LA Neighborhood Land Trust is grateful for the support of Senator Gonzalez and to be working with the City of Maywood as well as Communities for a Better Environment and to improve and create more green spaces for Maywood residents,” said Ashley Hart, Project Manager, Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust.
